South Granville is the only area where I can spend the majority of my day and cover only two blocks. There are so many great shops; it’s easy to get caught up without realizing that your day has vanished. Genevieve Allen’s Violet Boutique is a large contributing factor to this. With their exclusive lines and gorgeous printed pieces, the excitement will kick in and you’re bound to try on everything. It’s a huge time-suck, but in a good way.
Adele Tetangco: What do you look for when you’re buying for Violet?
Genevieve Allen: I look for pieces that catch my eye and have something special about them. It might be the quality of the construction, the print, the fabric or a beautiful and interesting shape. I like things that are fashion forward but still wearable.
AT: Who’s the “Violet” shopper? If you had to describe her in one or two sentences what would it be?
GA: She’s someone who appreciates design, art and culture and is thoughtful about the way she presents herself. We hope to have a little something for everyone at Violet. We have a lot of mother/daughter shoppers and I’m always impressed with the age range of our customer.
AT: Can you tell me a little bit about the lines you carry?
GA: We carry a range of contemporary designers from up and coming to well established. Most of the lines are from New York or Paris and the majority of them are exclusive to Violet in Vancouver. So you won’t see anyone else wearing your dress!
AT: Which ones are your favourite?
GA: It’s so hard to choose because I love them all! But you will find a lot of Suno, Tucker and Rachel Comey in my closet. I also love absolutely every piece of jewellery that Lizzie Fortunato makes and find it very hard not to take it all home.
AT: Name one thing that everyone loves to buy from Violet?
GA: Great printed pieces and statement necklaces from Lizzie Fortunato.
AT: Name something you’d love to bring into the store, but can’t.
GA: I would love to bring in more shoes but I don’t have the space.
AT: What’s your go-to outfit?
GA: My go-to outfit these days is a pair of printed silk Tucker pants with a tee and a blazer and a pair of Rachel Comey boots. That’s my only have a few minutes to get ready, don’t have time to be creative, fail-proof outfit.
AT: Tell us about your dog – I love that dog.
GA: Her name is Beatrice and she’s a King Charles Spaniel. She’s super shy but also very curious. She most likely won’t let you pet her but if you sit on the couch she’ll jump up beside you for a cuddle.
AT: Do you sell online? Can we find everything from your store on your site?
GA: Yes! We have on online store. You can’t find everything there but we are working on that. We post about our new arrivals on the blog and our goal is to grow the online section this summer to include more of what we have in the shop.
AT: What songs are playing on your store’s playlist?
GA: We have a lot on rotation because I get sick of the music so fast. Lately we’ve been listening to Songza (the online playlist app) they have a playlist that is based on the T.V show Girls that I’ve been pretty into. Everything from Kate Bush, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Rolling Stones, Bon Iver & Robyn to Van Morrison.
