Negroni Week – June 1-7

We first heard about Negroni week in 2013 while flipping through an early spring issue of Imbibe! magazine. The Negroni cocktail had long been on our radar as one of the most simple to make, yet extremely delicious cocktails in history. Three ingredients of equal ratio & garnish is all it takes to craft this little gem of a libation. So why the week dedicated to such a simple mixture?

Likely, it has a lot to do with one of the most important bartenders of our lifetime – Gaz Regan – the author of ‘The Bartender’s Bible,’ ‘The Joy of Mixology’ and of course  ‘The Negroni: A Gaz Regan Notion.’ Fittingly, the latter of the three was published about three weeks prior to the inaugural Negroni Week in 2013. Gaz has penned a few other books as well, but it is his collection of essays on the history and popularity of the Negroni that stands out. Gaz has all but trademarked his signature ‘Index finger stir’ technique. Not many others can get away with putting their fingers in the Negroni of Philip Duff, Charlotte Voisey or David Wondrich. There are likely countless other Negroni cocktails that have seen Gaz’s index. A quick google image search reveals dozens on the first page alone.

Negroni Week was created in 2103 as a celebration of one of the cocktail as an opportunity to raise money for charitable causes around the world. Within the first two years,  Negroni Week grew from more than 100 participating bars to more than 1,300 participating bars around the world and more than $120,000 raised for charities.

This year, Negroni Week returns from June 1-7, when once again, bars around the world will mix their favorite Negroni variations and donating a portion of proceeds from each one sold to a charity of their choice.

The Donnelly Group have been involved since year one and this June will be offering a different variation of the Negroni for each of the seven days at Clough Club, Granville Room & The Blackbird. That is twenty-one variations of the drink for those counting. Mixtures of various gins and vermouth as well as a variety of serving styles – from frozen to powdered. Each day will bring a new take on this classic cocktail.
