The judging system is based off of an international system created by the North American Competitive Beard and Moustache Alliance.

A 5-10 point judging system is used by 3-4 judges. Half points are allowed. The numbers 10, 9.5 and 9 are only allowed to be given once per judge per category (places 1, 2 and 3 per judge).

The lowest and highest score are dropped for a total possible maximum of 40 points (perfect 10 times 3-4 judges).

The judges are instructed by a member of the host group on how to judge and then each judge issues one number between 5 and 10 (not a complex system of multiple scored criteria, like figure skating).

Moustaches are judged on shape, style, how it matches the competitors overall look. Beards are judged on colour, thickness/fullness, shape, and how well the competitor wears it (style).

Freestyle categories are judged on creativity and overall difficulty of the design.

The Whiskerina (female faux-beards) category is judged on creativity, and originality.
