The 4th time’s a charm. Chole Sevigny is back with a new collection for Opening Ceremony marking it as her 4th season with them. And this time she’s collaborated with the Barton Perreira Company to create some pretty amazing sunglasses.
The sunnies range in price from $395 – $440 and come in various colours. Including flaming red, deep purple, clear and black. The thick plastic frames reek of Chloe’s style – with round shapes and cut-away tops.
These glasses make me long for the heat. I am so over the dark days of winter.

I fully admit that over the past 10 or so years of being a grown-up at Christmas I have gone through at least 8 of them being fully un-prepared. Last minute gift shopping with zero ideas, un-inspired wandering throughout malls and shopping districts and online browsing random websites looking for any gift that would do took me to the wee hours.
This year was no different – emails to loved ones asking what they would like to see under the tree this year went back and forth like they always do. But, I think my mother put it best this year that the best ideas come the day after Christmas and never before or at the time you are asked.
This concept is crazy as I remember being able to burn through the Sears Holiday Wish Book and rack up a crazy long list of things I couldn’t live without. But something happened to that pre-teen and the Wish list got shorter and shorter year after year.
Of course, it wasn’t true every year, and my family and friends have produced some amazing gifts year in and year out. But that same question always seems to stump me as Autumn turns to Winter each year. A new question has come up these past few years though, and it has caught me almost as off-guard as the other.
“Is there anything special you need in the way of liquor or beer?” For a bartender, this should be the easiest question to answer. Pretty much just insert your 3-4 favorite brands and have a merry holiday.
My folks aren’t big drinkers, and their hometown isn’t exactly the best place to go spirit shopping. I sent them a list of desirables and they nailed it. My home bar is vast enough that I kept it pretty skewed to beer as it doesn’t travel well and if I needed hard-bar over the 4 day trip I could just as easy pack a bottle or two.
As the facebook updates from bartender friends all over the world I realized my error. I failed to pack any ‘festive’ treats for myself and had to scramble to participate in the various ‘groupme’ or ‘whatsapp’ group toasts and cheers. Not a huge problem, but I definitely noted some amazing holiday cocktails and drinks I will not be without next year.
Just reading about this soon-to-be holiday classic made me want to trade in the traditional rum & egg nog and start the magic bullet to grind up some banana. Given that Vancouver Bartender of the Year Shaun Layton has been challenging local glasswipes to test their skills on blue cocktails for the better part of a year now, this is one I must try at home.
My friend David Delany sent me a picture of his back bar in Worcester and it boasts 9 bottles of Del Maguey Mezcal book-ending a bottle of Green Chartreuse. If you haven’t hopped on board with the wonderful flavor of Mezcal, you owe yourself a taste this year before it is out.
Don’t balk at the price tag. This is sold in a Magnum format (3L) so it is more like buying a large format wine to share with great friends. Totally worth the investment if you have 3-4 joining for the festivities.
Camper has quickly risen to the top of my morning blog scans. His updates are thorough and informative and the topics are always on the forefront of cutting edge mixology. The Tackler is just one of many cocktails he covered this December and perfect for spreading some holiday cheer. You can check out his blog here: www.alcademics.com
I am a sucker for great packaging on spirit related products. I often get sucked into buying beer, wine and spirits based on their packaging. This process if often pass/fail and rarely do I end up with undrinkable liquid. Past favorite wins have included Hudson Baby whiskey, Hitachino nest white ale and the ever-changing Anchor Christmas Ale.
All three were originally purchased based solely on the package, and all three have never disappointed. I look forward to my first taste of Spirit No. 13 at the very least to see what is contained inside that amazing bottle design.

On Nov 23rd we had A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad down to the Red Bull lounge for a screening of the Tribe documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life followed by a Q&A with Ali. While the heads in attendance were enjoying Heini’s and Redbull/vodkas (Ali had the fruit punch), Flipout hosted the Q&A and everything Tribe was covered.
There was just too much info and knowledge dropped to write a quick review, so either hit the player above to stream the audio or the link below to download the Q&A session. For some extra Tribe goodness, Seko was on the tables before the screening and dropped an ill Native Tongues set. Hit the link below to download as well.
